Feeding Indoor Cats in Dubai: What the Heat and Apartment Life Actually Mean for Your Cat's Diet
Most indoor cats in Dubai are overfed, under-watered, and not moving enough. The climate makes all three problems worse. Here's what we actually see at the clinic and what to do about it.
The Weight Problem Nobody Talks About
Dubai apartment cats don't hunt, don't roam, and spend most of the day on a sofa in an air-conditioned room. That's not a criticism of the lifestyle - it's just reality, and it has a direct effect on how much they should be eating.
We regularly see cats coming in at 6, 7, 8 kilograms that should be around 4.5. Their owners are often surprised because the cat seems happy and is eating well. But excess weight in cats isn't just a cosmetic issue - it accelerates joint disease, strains the kidneys, and significantly increases the risk of diabetes.
The fix is usually simple: measure food by weight, not by eye or by how much the cat asks for. Cats are very good at convincing people they're starving. Most aren't.
Water: The Real Problem with Dry Food in Dubai
Cats evolved in desert environments and have a low thirst drive. They're designed to get most of their water from prey. A mouse is about 70% water. A bowl of dry kibble is around 10%.
In Dubai's climate, with air conditioning pulling moisture from the air, this gap matters more than it would in a more temperate country. Cats on dry-only diets can exist in a state of mild chronic dehydration for years, which quietly damages kidney function over time.
A water fountain helps - running water triggers the drinking instinct better than a static bowl. But the most effective thing is adding wet food. Even one wet meal a day makes a meaningful difference to hydration.
Wet vs Dry: We Will Give You a Straight Answer
Wet food is better for most adult cats in Dubai. It delivers hydration, is higher in protein, and is lower in carbohydrates than most dry foods. The argument against it is cost and convenience, which are real considerations - not every household can manage twice-daily wet meals.
If dry food is what works for your life, choose a high-quality one with meat as the first ingredient, not a grain or by-product. And add wet food at least once a day if you can. A 50/50 split is a reasonable target.
Free-feeding dry food - leaving a bowl out all day - is the biggest contributor to feline obesity we see. Cats don't self-regulate well when food is constantly available. Two measured meals a day is better.
Mistakes We See at the Clinic
Feeding kittens on adult food, or adults on kitten food. The calorie and nutrient profiles are different. Kitten food fed to an adult cat for years will cause weight gain and can affect kidney health.
Giving a lot of treats on top of full meals. Treats should come out of the daily food allowance, not be added on top of it. We see cats whose treat intake alone exceeds their calorie needs.
Switching foods too abruptly when a cat goes off their food. Cats can develop food aversions quickly, especially when they've been unwell. If your cat stops eating, that's a vet visit, not a food experiment.

How much should I feed my indoor cat in Dubai?
It depends on their weight, age, and the food you're using. Most adult cats need around 200-250 calories per day, but check the feeding guide on your specific food and weigh it out rather than estimating. If your cat is overweight, speak to your vet about a target weight and feeding plan.
Should I leave dry food out all day for my cat?
We don't recommend it. Free-feeding is the most common cause of feline obesity we see in Dubai. Two measured meals a day - morning and evening - works better for weight management and also means you notice quickly if your cat stops eating, which is a useful health signal.
My cat barely drinks water. Should I be worried?
Cats have a low thirst drive by nature. If your cat is on wet food they may barely touch their water bowl and that's fine - they're getting hydration from their food. If they're on dry food only and rarely drink, that's worth addressing. Try a water fountain and consider adding wet food to their diet.
What is the best cat food brand in Dubai?
We recommend looking at the ingredients rather than the brand. Meat should be the first ingredient. Avoid foods where the first ingredient is a grain, corn, or a by-product meal. Royal Canin, Hills, and Purina Pro Plan are widely available in Dubai and have good quality control. For cats with specific health issues, your vet may recommend a prescription diet.
