How to Choose a Vet in Dubai: What to Look For, What to Ask, and Red Flags to Avoid

Most people register with a vet when their pet is already sick or injured — when they are stressed, time-pressed, and in no position to make a careful choice. The result is that they end up at whatever clinic is closest or has availability, which may not be the right fit for their pet's long-term needs.

Choosing a vet when your pet is healthy gives you time to visit the clinic, meet the team, check the facilities, and assess whether you feel confident and heard. It also means your vet has a baseline health record for your pet — so that when something does go wrong, they have context, not just a stranger in front of them.

In-house diagnostics are the single biggest practical differentiator. A clinic with on-site blood testing, urinalysis, X-ray, and ultrasound can diagnose most conditions in a single visit. A clinic that sends everything to an external lab will ask you to come back for results — which means more stress for your pet, more time, and sometimes delayed treatment in urgent situations.

Surgical capability matters more than most owners realise. Many conditions — from a suspected foreign body in the intestine to an orthopaedic injury — require surgery within hours or days. A clinic that can perform surgery in-house means your pet gets treated faster, without the stress of transfer to a different facility with a different team. Ask specifically: do you have a surgical suite? What procedures do you perform in-house? Do your vets have any postgraduate surgical training?

Emergency capability and hours are the third pillar. Dubai has relatively few true 24-hour emergency vet facilities. Knowing whether your regular clinic has genuine emergency capability during opening hours — oxygen therapy, IV fluids, the ability to stabilise a critical patient — is important. A clinic that can stabilise your pet while you arrange a transfer is far better than one that simply redirects you elsewhere.

Before registering your pet, ask these directly: How many vets work at this clinic? What are their backgrounds and training? Do you have in-house blood testing, X-ray, and ultrasound? What surgical procedures can you perform in-house? What happens if my pet has an emergency outside your opening hours? How do you handle pain management during and after procedures?

The quality of the answers tells you a great deal. Specific, confident answers about equipment, credentials, and protocols indicate a clinic that has thought carefully about how it operates. Vague answers about 'caring for your pet' without specifics are not reassuring. You are looking for evidence of clinical rigour, not just warmth.

Be cautious of clinics that offer anaesthesia-free dental cleaning — it cannot be done safely or effectively without general anaesthesia, and any clinic promoting it is prioritising marketing over evidence-based medicine. Similarly, a clinic that diagnoses and prescribes without a thorough physical examination, or that relies entirely on external labs for basic diagnostics, may not have the clinical infrastructure to properly support your pet.

Pressure to purchase unnecessary products or supplements at every visit, very high staff turnover, or a clinic where you never see the same vet twice are also worth noting. Continuity of care matters in veterinary medicine — your pet's history, their normal baseline, and the relationship between vet and patient all contribute to better outcomes over time.
