What to do if you find a cat/kitten on the street: First steps

Finding a stray cat or kitten can feel overwhelming at first, especially if you are unsure what to do next. However, calm and thoughtful actions can make a significant difference to their safety and future wellbeing.

The first step is to pause and assess the situation. Not every cat you see outdoors is

truly stray. Some cats are allowed to roam and may belong to a nearby home, so it is important to observe from a distance. Look for a collar or identification tag and take note of the cat’s condition and behaviour. Cats with a clipped ear might be part of the community and have been TNR'd. (Trap, neutered and released)

If you have found a kitten, it is essential to consider whether the mother may be nearby. In many cases, mother cats leave their kittens temporarily to find food. Watching quietly for a while can help you determine whether the kitten is genuinely abandoned. If the cat or kitten is in immediate danger due to traffic, extreme weather, or other hazards, carefully moving them to a safer location is appropriate.

Once you have determined that help is needed, focus on providing immediate care.

Approach calmly and speak softly, as stray cats are often frightened and defensive. Sudden movements can cause them to panic. If possible, gently contain the cat using a carrier, a secure box, or a towel to prevent escape and reduce stress.

Keeping them warm is especially important, particularly for kittens, who struggle to regulate their body temperature. A soft blanket or towel can provide much-needed comfort.

Food and water are often the next priority. Offering wet cat food or plain, unseasoned cooked chicken is ideal, as these are easy to digest and appealing. Fresh water should always be available in a shallow dish. Cow’s milk should be avoided, as it can cause stomach upset in cats. Very young kittens may not be able to eat solid food and may require kitten milk replacement formula.

Feeding should be done carefully using a bottle or syringe, and advice from a veterinary professional is strongly recommended in these cases. Please reach out for us for support and advice.

Checking for identification can help reunite a lost pet with their owner. Some cats may be wearing collars with contact details, but many are not. Taking the cat to a veterinary clinic or animal shelter to scan for a microchip is an important step and can quickly provide answers about ownership.

A visit to the veterinarian should be arranged as soon as possible. A health check will identify any injuries, illnesses, or underlying conditions that need treatment. The vet can also advise on vaccinations and parasite control, such as treatment for fleas, ticks, and worms. If the cat is not already neutered or spayed, this is a good time to discuss options and timing, as this plays a key role in long-term health and population control.

Deciding what to do next depends on the outcome of these steps. If the cat appears to be lost, making an effort to locate the owner is important. Posting on local community groups, social media pages, and lost-and-found pet platforms can be very effective. If no owner comes forward, you may choose to foster or adopt the cat yourself. If this is not possible, local rescue organisations and shelters can often provide guidance, support, or placement options.

Throughout the process, patience and compassion are essential. Stray cats are often scared, confused, and unsure of people, especially if they have had limited human contact or negative experiences. Giving them time, space, and gentle care can help them slowly build trust. With the right approach, you can play a vital role in changing a stray cat or kitten’s life for the better and helping them move toward a safe and loving home.
